What is Brain Gym®?
Brain Gym is a programme of physical movements and exercises to improve “the physical skills of learning and performing”. Having the structural and physical foundations in place, they help to boost brain function, enhance learning ability and cognitive function, posture, and regulate emotions and behaviour. The programme involves movement-based practices designed to promote well-being.
At the heart of Brain Gym lies the concept of the mind-body connection. Movement plays a crucial role in this process. Have you ever noticed how a quick walk can clear your head when you’re stuck on a problem? That’s the power of movement in action. The Brain Gym® program is committed to the principle that moving with intention leads to optimal learning. Learning at any age is, of course, important to achieve change and better outcomes.
The idea is that specific physical activities can improve the way our brain receives and processes information, leading to better focus, memory, and overall mental performance.
It involves 26 fun and easy activities. These are specific movements that were developed through research that began in 1969 by Paul E. Dennison, Ph.D. and his wife Gail. They are based on how the brain is developed in children as they go through the various stages of developmental movements. Brain Gym enhances the lives of people of just about any age! I have used Brain Gym on ages of 3 to 80 years old.
Brain Gym® utilizes an educational model to:
- Promote learning through play
- Draw out and honor innate intelligence
- Build awareness regarding the value of movement in daily life
- Emphasize the ability to notice and respond to movement-based needs
- Encourage self responsibility
- Encourage creativity and self-expression
The Brain Gym programme has been so effective that it has spread worldwide into over 80 countries. People are experiencing the joy and ease of enhanced performance in educational settings, the corporate world, athletic training, personal well-being, and more!
In addition to the Brain Gym Movements, there is the powerful Brain Gym Balance process, which you can experience during a private consultation or during the Brain Gym 101 Course. The theory behind how it works is that the balance process creates new pathways, and better connected neural networks in the brain. These connections serve as a new highway for using the whole brain.
Sometimes people get stuck in one side of the brain and find it hard to move forward or are in a state of stress involving certain activities. The balancing process assists people to move from a state of reacting to a more conscious mode which allows additional positive choices. Many people have experienced immediate changes that increase the ease of doing things.
The Brain Gym balance assists the right and left brain hemispheres to be in sync with each other and work together more efficiently for enhanced wellbeing and performance. This process may also involve even deeper structures of the brain, depending on your chosen goal. Deeper goals may include areas such as motivation, attention, and organizational abilities.

Optimum Brain Organisation Course (201)
Every one of us has a preferred eye, ear, hand/arm, foot/leg and also a preferred brain hemisphere, which are predominantly used for action. This creates a very unique personal learning profile with specialisations on the left and/or right side of the body.
Not every profile is conducive to the learning and working process. Some of the profiles reveal blockages and inhibitions that are worth recognising and resolving, so that learning and working are easy and enjoyable. In this course, following the Brain Gym programme, there are four further profile balances in which dominance patterns and learning profiles are recognised and also interpreted. Some Brain Gym® contents are deepened.
There are also variations of BG movements that make it possible to promote sensori-motor learning and enhance working with the use of our talents, resources and creativity.
This course is extremely interesting not only for all parents and teachers, with the aim of making learning easier for children and pupils, but also for anybody who wishes to enhance their cognitive functions.
N.B.: This course is mandatory for Brain Gym Instructor training.
Mandatory completion of BG 101 course.
